No summertime trip to the mountain is complete without topping it off with a savory treat from Canary Ice Cream shop. Customers will be clamoring for cones this season at the popular parlor tucked away inside the Hoodland Bazaar at the Plaza Shopping Center.

Brothers and Canary Ice Cream co-owners Khalid and AJ Kamahwee, who opened almost a year and a half ago, are gearing up for their busy season by adding four new savory flavors to its menu. You’ll have to drop in for a taste of chocolate chip mint, chocolate brownie tender, salted caramel and mango sorbet.

In all, there are now 13 flavors from which to choose. All ice cream is made by the Umpqua brand, based in Roseburg. Of course, favorites like huckleberry cheesecake and chocolate chip mint are as popular as ever among customers with a taste for sweets.

“We also do all-organic smoothies, very berry smoothies and power green smoothies,” Khalid said. “In the summertime, we did great last year with ice cream when the weather was nice and warm. It depends on the season, honestly.”

Business slows down in the winter, but picks up significantly as the temperature rises, making Canary the place with the coolest dessert on Mount Hood.

Besides basic chocolate and vanilla, other flavors include dairy free lemon sorbet, sherbet, pistachio almond, chocolate peanut butter, and for coffee lovers, caramel cold brew with chocolate chips. Sugar cones, waffle cones, cups, milkshakes and sundaes are available.

Just thinking about their organic smoothies will have your mouth watering. Try a very berry, which has a blend of raspberries, blackberries, strawberries and blueberries, or one of the power greens, spinach, kale or avocado.

Hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and Sunday, and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday. The shop is closed Monday and Tuesday.

The Canary Ice Cream shop is located at 68278 Highway 26, Welches. Just look for the signs directing you from the highway to Hoodland Bazaar. While you’re enjoying your ice cream, check out the Kamahwee brothers’ other business. Hoodland Bazaar is filled with exotic jewelry, rocks, stones, Turkish lamps, and rugs imported from Afghanistan and around the world.
