Welcome back, dear reader, to another installment of Fore, the column devoted to bringing sunshine and happiness into your lives. Begging the question so eloquently posed by the Carpenters, “Why do birds suddenly appear every time you read here.” Ah well, I’d better get to it before a chorus of “Kumbaya” breaks out.
Since I’m writing this on Father’s Day, I am going to share a few of my favorite Dad jokes about golf. For instance: How many golfers does it take to screw in a lightbulb? “Fore,” of course. What is a golfer’s worst nightmare? The Bogeyman. What does a golfer’s diet consist of? A lot of greens and water. What is the difference between a golfer and a skydiver? A skydiver has a better chance of landing in a fairway. I shot one under at golf today, one under a tree, one under a bush and one under water. Golf is harder than baseball because you still have to play your foul balls. I’m so bad at golf I had to regroup my ball retriever before my clubs. And lastly: Bad at golf? Join the club!
Okay, okay enough fooling. I’ve got a lot of news this month. First, in club news, are the results from our Memorial Day event. The format was reverse waltz and on the winning team were George and Patty Wilhelm, Don Erickson and Justin Miller. Second place was shared by four teams including my own. The KP winners were Todd Plummer, Pat Wiesner, Judy Carlson and John Vermaas. On Sunday we played a nine hole, four person scramble which resulted in a tie for first place between the team of Mike and Lyn Miskowicz, Del Davis and Cathy Gulledge and the team of Don and Terri Erickson with George and Patty Wilhelm. The KP winners for Sunday were George Wilhelm, John Vermaas and Terri Erickson. This year I’m happy to report we have brought back the Horse Race, a very fun event. The winners were Don Erickson (yeah, him again) and Cathy Gulledge. In second place were Brian Meskel and Seaberg Einersson. Third place, Tom Franklin and Rae Nomura. Well done all of you. Our next big event is the 4th of July weekend. I’ll see you there.
In other news we continue to enjoy the Social Golf on Tuesday and Friday evenings that is open to everyone. Just get there before 5 p.m. when we pick teams, cough up your ten bucks and maybe win some money! The Resort has a full slate of music events scheduled every Friday and Saturday at Mallards. They play outside on the grass patio, when it’s not raining, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. For a great follow up to fireworks on the 4th go see Jacob Westfall, who is playing on Saturday the 5th. He is my favorite of all the people I’ve seen at Mallards, maybe because he always remembers me by name. If you go, say hi and tell him I sent ya. Later on August 1st and 2nd we will feature a couple of local favorites with Eric Kallio and Fingers & Chili. Come on out and support local music at the coolest spot in town.
Well, dear reader, that is enough for this month so get out and play a round, and when you do remember to “Hit Em Straight!”
